Don Gallery | Shanghai Dandy | Special: Confessional Writing by Dandy | a.f.art theatreFangling

No Content (2017) is a commissioned work by a.f.art theatreFangling for “Shanghai Dandy.” The artist plays the part of the awkward dandy by taking her own body as an example in the theatrical framework delineated for the Dandy. She wears a loose-fitting white shirt skimming over her feminine physique and attempts to question the causal connection between the male gaze as a model of power and the female exhibit as a bearer of gender. Her reluctance to ingratiate herself is a form of antagonism. Frequently corrected by a male voice-over – “No,” the artist modifies her behaviours while shouting out “what the hell,” and “damn it”, translated into Chinese and some other ugly words that do not belong to her mother tongue. By such mimicry, the artist has her female body constructed, training herself to be a qualified object being gazed at and intensifying her objectivity. She consciously chooses and appropriates some intercultural communicative symbols, taking a menacing tone to challenge the patriarchal and colonial system.
